What to do if you’re hired to be a square peg in a round hole...

What to do if you’re hired to be a square peg in a round hole to shake things up a bit but the hole just keeps getting rounder and you keep getting squarer?

Well, things don’t get shaken, they get seriously stirred.

There’s a strange phenomenon where people with vast amounts of creativity and vision, who are perhaps a little non-conventional, are being hired because the hiring manager is using them as their ‘feel good project’. By this I mean, the manager thinks they can be the one to make them rounder, can save them and conventionalise them.

Their motivation may genuinely be compassion but I’m not convinced. I think it’s an unconscious (or maybe even conscious) attempt at demonstrating their management skills. It’s great in theory but it’s people’s lives that are being played with and they are leaving these places feeling squarer than ever.
